Looking at the Coast to Coast Way picked out on a map, one of the first things you notice is that it goes through three National Parks. No wonder the route is so beautiful that it became one of Alfred Wainwright’s favourite walks!
Travelling east from St Bees, you encounter the Lake District first, entering it just past Cleator Moor on the way to Dent Fell. You’ll then head northerly to Ennerdale Bridge before following Ennerdale Water.
From there you’ll take in some of the best-known views of the Lake District and be close enough to others for a quick detour to be a real possibility. You finally leave the Lake District by Shap and the beautiful, historic Shap Abbey.

When you’re getting ready for your trip along the Coast to Coast Way, the Lake District’s official website will give you a clear idea what the route will look like – but the experience of walking it for yourself will be very different. Take our word for it, this part of the route must be experienced in person to be believed.
